Mid-October will mark 25 years at the Union County Sheriff’s Office for me. Most of that time I have spent as a Special Deputy. I have had the unique opportunity of viewing the Sheriff’s Office internally combined with the experience and perspective that comes from working in the private sector. I bring the viewpoint of a business owner. I served over 12 years as the chair of the Millcreek Zoning Commission. Additionally, my background as a United States Marine Corps Veteran has instilled in me values that I look for in leadership and character. I say all of this to give context to my endorsement.

I typically do not share my opinions or endorsements publicly; however, I feel an obligation to do so in this case. I fully endorse Mike Justice for Sheriff. Work culture is important to all of us. It can affect every aspect of your life. When we think about those that work in the law enforcement profession and what they may have to drag home with them, we automatically go to thoughts of the horrible accident, or the call involving a gun, or an abused child or spouse. The times they are called to someone’s aid, only to have that person turn on them. This is just a small list of things that they have to manage and deal with while serving you. These things don’t just go away when they get in their cars to go home at the end of shift. This is in addition to the same problems and issues that the rest of us deal with in our chosen profession. The problems that we take home with us because we can’t just switch it off. It is in this context that Mike Justice's leadership shines, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to creating an environment where our finest feel valued, supported, and eager to serve I say with full confidence that Mike is the right person to make the Sheriff’s Office a place where excellent employees want to come and to stay.

I have seen this in the way that he leads. I can see this in the results that he has shown in the relationships that he develops with not only those that work for him, but those he works for and those he works with. These relationships are both internal and external. This is more than just getting along with others. Any politician that can shake hands and smile will fit into that category. This is about sincere invested relationships that are to the benefit of all. There are great examples of Mike doing this very thing in the other endorsements. The Sheriff has the power to improve a healthy work environment. The role of Sheriff extends beyond enforcement; at this level it has to encompass the cultivation of a culture that enables deputies and staff to thrive and serve this county to the best of their ability. This includes not just providing the necessary equipment but also fostering a work environment where feedback is valued and acted upon. Mike Justice embodies this approach to leadership. Now you share that responsibility. You have the privilege to vote in this primary as a citizen of this county and show that these issues are important to you as well. I would encourage you to inform yourself and vote. I would sincerely appreciate it if you would join me in voting for Mike Justice for Sheriff.

— Dale Mabry

During my fifty-year career in law enforcement with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Union County Sheriff’s Office and Chief of the Marysville Division of Police I have worked with both candidates for Sheriff. Based on my experience, I support Mike Justice for Sheriff and encourage you to vote to elect him Union County Sheriff.

I want to correct the record on the creation of the MADE joint drug task force. When I was chief of police, I was approached by Union County Prosecutor David Phillips who suggested the departments work together to investigate drug crimes. I agreed, and together we approached the sheriff with the idea.

After the task force was formed, detectives Mike Justice and Don McGlenn were assigned. These two were directly responsible for the success of the task force holding dealers accountable for drug trafficking and drug related deaths. But for the cooperation between these detectives and their excellent work the task force would have failed.

Mike Justice never sought credit for these successes and was truly a team player. I and many officers under my command, worked with Mike in several parts of policing from patrol to investigations and the special response team. Mike consistently showed innovation, leadership and – above all, integrity throughout his career.

For these reasons and more, I endorse Mike Justice as the next Union County Sheriff.

— Floyd Golden
Chief, Marysville Division of Police (ret.)

Mike Justice was my Lieutenant at the Sheriff’s office for approximately four and a half years. During this time, I was a Jerome/Millcreek Township Public Safety Officer (PSO), so I was able to see Mike, first hand, to ALWAYS being a selfless servant to the community of Union County which I live in. Mike, was a leader, hard worker, dependable, and so much more. Mike is experienced, makes sound decisions and has the best interests in those he’s working for, working with and the community itself. I believe Mike would be a great sheriff that the community could count on. Mike is more than capable of tackling the current issues at the Sheriff’s office like the turnover rate, low morale and etc. — Jordan Shoemaker
Former Deputy/Public Safety Officer

I retired 5 years ago from the Union County Sheriff’s Office after serving 30 years with the office, 25 of those years as a patrol Sergeant. For the last 5 years I have been a Special (Reserve) Deputy with the office. I ask you to vote for Mike Justice for Union County Sheriff. As a Sergeant with the Sheriff’s Office, I supervised both Captain Mike Justice and the current Sheriff during their early careers. Mike Justice showed qualities of a great leader and became one of the best leaders I worked with. During his time as a detective, Mike was thoughtful and thorough, leaving no stone unturned in his investigations. I saw him mentor other detectives and could see his professional influence positively affecting them. Mike’s experience was invaluable in solving complex crimes. When Mike was promoted to Lieutenant of the Patrol Division, he supported his staff whenever needed, including covering shifts, taking calls and mentoring deputies. He was exceptional, successfully taking on this challenge even while the Patrol Division was severely short-staffed. Mike has been consistently recognized for his excellent work both by his peers, the Union County Sheriff’s Office and the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. Throughout, Mike Justice pushed for excellence in law enforcement, demanding that deputies serve the public with professionalism and fairness. His work ethic is unmatched. The Union County Sheriff’s Office needs new leadership, a leader with new ideas. We need a sheriff who has the respect of – and respects – his deputies. The office has lost experienced deputies, detectives, and staff and will continue to suffer losses if the current administration stays in place. Mike Justice has the leadership skills, ideas, integrity and drive to rebuild the Sheriff’s Office into one of the best in Ohio. Above all, he has the support and respect of the law enforcement officers who work to keep us safe. For these reasons, I endorse Mike Justice as our next Union County Sheriff in this election. Please join me in voting Mike Justice for Sheriff. Sgt. Mike Burton (UCSO Ret.)

I recently retired from the sheriff's office after 33 plus years of total service, having worked for four different Sheriffs (Wolfe, Overly, Nelson and Patton). I have known Mike for over 25 years, working with or near him the majority of that time. As a small department, Mike was visible most of the time in every division he worked, except when he was on loan to the DEA. He was my supervisor directly or indirectly for roughly six of those years. Mike has always been a man of integrity. Although serious in his expectations of his subordinates, he always led by example, ready to get in the "trenches with the troops". The Marine Corps defines two kinds of leaders as authoritative and persuasive, and a great leader knows when to employ each as needed. Mike is the epitome of this definition. As previously stated in other endorsements, you could always find Mike filling in a shift, and, or just coming out to work patrol with his guys and gals. Never more than a phone call away, he was always ready and willing to help one of us. His first act after assuming command of the patrol division was to ride with each deputy. He asked each of us to voice our concerns on how to improve the division and the office as a whole. He has always been community minded as well. He encouraged getting out of the cruiser and making personal contact with residents as the weather, call volume and neighborhoods would allow. Mike will be a great sheriff for everybody, citizens and deputies alike. Thomas Bidlack, UCSO (retired). — Thomas Bidlack
Mr.

I was in law enforcement for 35 years and involved in every facet of the job. To say that I've seen a lot of officers /deputies, Chiefs /Sheriffs come and go would be an understatement. Through these years one sentiment has rung true, and I've relayed this sentiment to officers both young and old as incentive to reflect on their own actions and look into their own future as an officer. What is this nugget of wisdom? Simply that regardless of your accomplishments or credentials, you will be judged in one of two ways when you leave your agency. You’ll be classified as, “It's about time he/she left, now we can hire someone new” or, “It's too bad we lost him/her, we could have used a few more like them.” I've known Mike Justice since he first put on a uniform at the Union County Sheriff's Office. Mike definitely falls into the latter category, his dedication and leadership will definitely be missed in that agency. They could, “...use a few more like him.” In working with Mike through the years, and more closely later in our careers, I realized why we worked so well together. We shared the same mantra, “Not in my town (county)!” Mike wasn't satisfied in waiting for the criminal to come back, or get caught again. Mike sought them out…any place…any time…day or night, and brought them back to face JUSTICE for harming our friends and neighbors. JUSTICE… it's not just his name. I believe Union County could use a few more like him, and I support Mike Justice for Union County Sheriff! Terry Basinger, Union County Property Owner, Law Enforcement Officer (retired), — Terry Basinger

As a dispatcher for the Union County Sheriff's Office(UCSO) for the last 6.5 years I have come to love Union County, the citizens and the people that protect and serve there (Deputies, Police and Fire/EMS). It was my honor and joy to take 9-1-1 calls, dispatching both law enforcement units and fire units to help as they could. Everyone I worked with during those 6 years (2017-2024) had such a passion and care for the community as well. For those that spend their time putting their lives in danger to help others every day (just as any other employee would) they need the support of their leadership behind them at all times. They need to know that if things get crazy, or that really hard call comes in, someone is going to help them through it, give them support and take care of them as well. I can speak for both Dispatch and Patrol when I say that is sadly not what I saw from many in the current Administration at the UCSO. When the chips were down, it was on the line level Sergeants to be there for their people only. No one else was coming. The exception to this was Mike Justice. When staffing was short, he would come in on weekends or 3rd shift to help out. Both as a Lieutenant and a Captain he took time out to speak to both Patrol and Dispatch, make sure we were doing ok, see if we needed anything etc. You knew you could call him at any time of the day or night and he would drop what he was doing to support you, answer a question or give direction if that's what was needed. An example of this is the day one of our on-duty Sergeants slipped and fell on the ice. He ended up needing to go to the hospital and even though Mike was off work, it was late, and not even a life-threatening emergency, he dropped everything and went to the hospital to sit with that employee. This is the kind of leadership that employees WANT to work for. Showing your employees that THEY are your priority keeps them happy, working, building trust and respect. I have never seen this from the current Administration. For the sake of the friends that I had to leave behind I sincerely hope to see change in 2025. They deserve to be supported, respected and heard. The jobs they do are rewarding but can be very emotionally and physically hard at times, especially in the current political climate. Everyone is watching and waiting for them to mess up. It is essential that those that "lead" them don't do the same. I left the UCSO and took a pay cut to take a job Dispatching for another local police department so I could still serve the people and community I love while gaining the support of a police chief that is for his people. This is what Union County needs from a Sheriff as well. I hope to see Mike Justice provide this for them in the coming years. — Tiffany Cook
Former Dispatcher for the UCSO

If I were to look up the definition of Selfless Servant, I wouldn't be surprised if I saw Mike Justice's picture in the dictionary. Other words such as Dedication, Selflessness, Passionate, Integrity, and Ethical are all ways to describe a Selfless Servant. They are also just a few of the many words you can use to describe Mike Justice. I've been in law enforcement for over 12 years, with 4 of those years spent working with Mike at the Union County Sheriff's Office. As the Patrol Lieutenant, Mike was tasked with overseeing the largest division of the office. Mike worked around the clock making sure our road deputies were supported to the best of his ability. He would cover open shifts, make schedule adjustments, and do what ever it took to make sure the staffing levels were safely maintained. On major holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years Eve, it was not uncommon for Mike to come in and spend the night working a shift so that we had extra help during the busy hours. Mike was the only command staff member to do this. None of the other Lieutenants, Chief Deputy, or Sheriff Patton did such things during my time there. Union County is growing. Marysville and Jerome Twp are exploding. The population demographics are shifting and this demands a willingness for change from the Sheriff's Office. A huge part of the high turnover rate for the office is a direct result of the current administration's resistance to change. Countless times, someone would present an idea to make something better, more efficient, more modern, or even to boost moral and it was rejected. Too often the response was "If you don't like it here, go somewhere else." That is not an effective leadership strategy. Unfortunately, that's exactly what I did. I believe Mike Justice, as Sheriff, will turn the department around. Mike is a reasonable person who cares about his employees. Mike understands in order to best serve the community, you have to start by developing a stable, dedicated workforce. Mike will work tirelessly to implement an office culture which will empower and support a whole workforce full of Selfless Servants. Finally, on a personal level, I want to demonstrate Mike's ability as a mentor. Near the end of my time at the sheriff's office, I was going through a rough patch in my life. I was going through a divorce, my father was terminally ill, and the low morale at work were all taking its toll on me. Mike and I had several conversations about my career and life goals. I had made a comment about not being sure if law enforcement was something I wanted to continue. After listening to Mike's wisdom and his thoughts on life, work, and purpose, I was able to find the "spark" again. While I no longer serve Union County, I have done my best to emulate Mike Justice. I apply the principles of being a Selfless Servant everyday and my career satisfaction has never been higher. I've never gotten a chance to personally thank him for all the guidance and wisdom he has given me. Just as Mike helped shape my career and personal life, I'm certain there are countless other people who have similar stories. Every law enforcement agency should have it's own version of Mike Justice. The citizens of Union County have a great opportunity to elect a Sheriff who truly cares about people. — Mike Casey
Former Deputy

I can't think of anyone who would make a better Sheriff than Mike Justice. I have known Mike and his family for over 30 years. Mike was President of the local FOP for over 10 years while I was Secretary/Treasurer and I know for a fact that Mike wants things done correctly. He was adamant that the FOP should support the Union County citizens and their charities with our donations. He made sure we supported the youth programs in the county. As a representative of the FOP, Mike went to the Union County Commissioners advocating for more staffing for the Sheriff's Office. While I worked at the Marysville Police Department I had the chance to work alongside Mike with our Special Response Teams. I can attest to the fact that he always put the safety of citizens and the team members over the outcome of the mission. Deputies whom I've talked with tell me they respect Mike for his support of them over the years and that he was always a fair leader and would listen to them, and their ideas. The over whelming support Mike received from the local FOP in endorsing him should show how well respected he is among his peers. Mike will make a great Sheriff and you can't go wrong voting for him in March. Ron Nicol (Retired) Sergeant, Marysville Police — Ron Nicol

My name is Kevin O'Brien. About 3 years ago, I retired from a 40 year plus Law Enforcement Career. During my career, I held the positions of Corrections Officer in a state prison and 2 different county jails. I was a Patrol Officer and an anti-crime plain clothes officer on a police department outside of New York City. I was a Road Patrol Officer for the Broward County Sheriff's Office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. I was a DEA Agent for 23 years, in Miami, The Dominican Republic, Richmond VA and Columbus, Ohio. I left the DEA in 2010 as a Supervisory Special Agent due to mandatory retirement. I joined the Franklin County Ohio Sheriff's Office and retired, after 9 years, as a the result of an off duty injury, I retired from there as a Sgt. in both the Main Jail and Jackson Pike. I am not telling you this to brag about myself. I am telling you this so you understand where my endorsement is coming from. I had the absolute pleasure of working with Mike while he was a Task Force Officer on the DEA Columbus Task Force. In my 40 plus years of Law Enforcement, I can honestly say that Mike Justice is the best, Police Officer/Investigator I have ever known or worked with. Mike is an intelligent, determined, Law Enforcement Officer with uncompromising integrity. The US Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Ohio sang him praises and his reputation spread among the criminals in the area. Mike's last name is Justice for a reason, he was born to be a leader of women and men in Law Enforcement. He will be the best thing to ever happen to Union County. Thank you. — Kevin O'Brien
Retired Law Enforcement Officer 42 years +.

I worked as a patrol Deputy and Public Safety Officer in Union County for four years before taking a position with a different agency. I have also served in the Army Reserve for 15 years, taking on a multitude of leadership roles. During my time at Union County I worked with Mike Justice as my supervisor. In my time working with Mike it was clear he was more than just a supervisor. Mike's dedication and passion showed he was a true servant-leader. Mike placed people first, and mission always. Mike was a proponent of taking ideas from those actually performing the job, and using those ideas to provide enhanced services for Union County. Having worked as Patrol Deputy, and specifically as a Public Safety Officer in Jerome Township, I saw the need to provide a different approach to patrolling the densely populated areas of Jerome VIllage/Township; when compared to the rest of Union County. What started as a pet project, and with the assistance of Mike, morphed into a real solution to providing the enhanced patrol. I informed Mike that I had begun to develop a bicycle patrol program that would be specific to the Jerome area but also be an asset to certain events that take place throughout Union County. Mike gave me his full support, working with me to develop a plan to present the project to command staff. The plan was ultimately successful and served as a catalyst for other bottom-up ideas to form from the rest of the deputies. This opportunity has bolstered my own career and Mike played a significant role in doing so. I saw numerous instances of Mike sacrificing his personal time for the betterment of Union County. Mike possessed a true servant’s heart and showed his willingness to serve others by taking numerous shifts, including weekends, to cover for Deputies who may have been sick or on vacation. Doing so was not within the scope of his duties as the Patrol Lieutenant, nor did he receive additional compensation for doing so. Mike did these things because he truly wishes to serve not only the citizens of Union County, but the people who worked under him. Mike was a great leader to work for. He was patient and fair, and addressed issues and concerns in a methodical manner that allowed for the best possible outcome. Mike also took the time to mentor me and others. Mike’s mentorship has proved to be invaluable to me throughout my career, and the lessons learned from Mike will not be forgotten. Union County would be hard pressed to find a better candidate for Sheriff than Mike Justice. — Curtis Myers
Former Deputy / PSO

Mike was the individual who introduced me to the profession of law enforcement. What started as a seed of curiosity, I walked in to the UCSO to try to find more information and was welcomed into Mike’s office with open arms as he sat me down and explained both the good and the ugly. Mike not only informed me of the process, but gave me career advice I use today. Unfortunately I was steered away from joining the agency by its members at the time. From young deputies to low level leadership I got a similar consensus, “A potentially great agency that is being restricted by poor culture”. Although I did not choose to apply, Mike has continued to show support by constantly checking up on my career progression and personal well being. Although early in my career, I have done extremely well, winning Shift Officer of the Year and consistently in the top 1 or 2 in the agency for narcotic and illegal firearm seizures. I say all this because I often wonder what great services and impact I could have potentially provided to my community if there was simply a positive culture. There is no greater candidate to directly represent the change that is desperately needed as Mike is a walking testament of leading by example. I look forward to seeing Union County being led by a man of extreme passion and extraordinary character! — Quincy Glunt
Police Officer

I spent nearly 9 years at the at the UCSO before deciding to move on from the agency in September of 2023. During my time there, it became quite evident a change in leadership was needed. I watched staffing numbers trickle upward until about 2017, then it plummeted. Staff was lost to several natural reasons, but the scary part was that the UCSO was losing staff incredibly fast and not able to back fill those positions. When I left, the agency was in a deficit of around 7-8 deputies which equates to roughly 20-25% of the patrol division. That does not include non-sworn staff such as dispatchers. The agency under current leadership was always a step behind competitors. When competitors across central Ohio were offering sponsored academies, the UCSO didn’t until YEARS later. Salary and benefits were always years behind, benefits still are. Instead of trying to be proactive, the current leadership didn’t offer a competitive salary increase until the end of 2023 after staffing numbers were already crippled and vital services were already affected. Current leadership has grown out of date and stale. The latest FOP endorsement of Mike Justice is a reflection of the work he has accomplished in his career, the respect he has garnered from members across all agencies associated with the lodge and beyond, and their desire to support a change for the benefit of Union County. I personally witnessed Mike Justice sacrifice his own weekends and evenings to step in and fill uncovered mandatory patrol overtime to help regular officers get some time off, a testimony to true Leadership. Mike was the only administrator to do so. I 100% back Mike Justice in his campaign for Sheriff, he was a great mentor to me during my time at the UCSO and helped me and many others achieve their career goals. Please join me in supporting Mike’s campaign by following his page, liking, sharing, contributing, asking for a yard sign, but most importantly voting! — Kevin Rigano

I have known Mike for 25 years and worked with him for 18 years at the Sheriff's Office. He is tough on bad guys, is a sharp law enforcement officer, is smart, and is dedicated to doing whatever it takes to get the job done. He is also kind, thoughtful and a good family man. He has worked in just about every position there is in law enforcement and approached each with anticipation, ready to learn all he could. Employees at the Sheriff's Office knew they could go to him with a problem and count on him to back them up when the going got rough. He isn't one to jump to conclusions but waits until all of the facts came to light before making a decision. Mike is honest. He doesn't have a hidden agenda. He puts others ahead of himself, always. He genuinely cares about our community and the employees at the Sheriff's Office; he wants to get things heading in the right direction. I believe Mike Justice is the best man for the job of Union County Sheriff. Please join me in voting for him on March 19th. — Kim Zacharias

Leadership and commitment; as a former federal task force officer for 4 years, Mike worked tirelessly to combat high level narcotics trafficking in central Ohio and around the U.S. Under the leadership of Sheriff Nelson, Mike’s autonomy and ongoing proactive efforts resulted in the dismantlement of several high level international drug trafficking organizations operating in Central Ohio. These drugs, more specifically heroin, were being distributed throughout central Ohio and in Union County. Mike’s drive and abilities resulted in life sentences for federal defendants as well as the seizure of millions of dollars in illicit drugs and drug proceeds. At least 250k in seized drug proceeds were able to be forfeited back to Union County coffers for use here in the county. As a resident of Union County and retired federal investigator, I strongly support Mike’s commitment to make the quality of life better for us all. — Scott Sundquist
